Vettakollen is one of Oslo's great surprises — a rocky summit just 30 minutes from the city centre that delivers views most visitors never realise exist. The forest begins the moment you leave the car, and the path winds steadily upward through birch and pine to the open rocky plateau at the top.
From the summit, on a clear day, you can see Oslo spread out below, the fjord glittering beyond, and on the clearest days the Swedish border hills on the horizon. The descent takes a different line, threading past hidden forest tarns and through quiet stands of silver birch that glow gold in autumn.
This is the hike that makes people understand why Osloites have such an easy relationship with nature — the wild is genuinely just around the corner.
Yes — Vettakollen is our easiest tour and is well suited to older children who can manage a 3.5-hour hike with around 380m of elevation gain. The trails are well-marked and mostly forested, with rocky sections near the summit. Contact us if you're unsure whether it's right for your group.
The hike is approximately 3.5 hours in total, including time at the summit. It's a half-day experience — if you start in the morning you'll be back at your hotel well before lunch.
From the summit you can see Oslo spread out below, the Oslofjord glittering beyond, and on the clearest days the hills along the Swedish border on the horizon.
Yes — Vettakollen sits in Nordmarka, the forested wilderness that begins at the edge of Oslo's suburbs. It is just 30 minutes by car from the city centre, making it the most accessible of our tours.
Vettakollen is a real forest and mountain hike — not a sightseeing tour. You walk through birch and pine forest, climb to a rocky summit with panoramic views, and experience the Norwegian outdoor culture (friluftsliv) that Osloites love, all within 30 minutes of the city centre.
